Geocities R.I.P.

Today, October 26, Geocities is closing after 15 years! This is really nostalgic for me because when I started using the internet as a kid, I got a lot of information on Geocities websites. This was before Wikipedia, when I wanted to learn about some topic and I had to find someone’s personal site about Greek mythology or classroom science experiments.

This is like a major chapter closing on the internet, right? In honor of all the cool pages that will disappear from the internet, I will carry of one of them onward into the future. One Professor Keith H. Seddon, Ph.D. has a Geocities page with my favorite translation of The Enchiridion by Epictetus. It looks like he hasn’t touched the page since 2002, and who knows if he’s even aware that it will soon be taken down. When I didn’t have the Handbook on my person I have frequently searched for this page to read Epictetus’s wisdom (as of today, it has 14,691 hits).

The Enchiridion, by Epictetus

Now you can bookmark it here. (Also, if you’re interested in a handmade book version, you can buy one from me for cheap) I really love The Enchiridion. It’s gotten me through hard times so I like telling people about it. This Thomas Wentworth Higginson translation was the first one I read and I think it’s the best. You can enjoy it in print, on Geocities for the time being, or on my website.

Anyway, maybe I’ll wake up tomorrow and Geocities will still be here.
